With experience in a wide range of building types and styles, commercial to residential, modern to traditional, large scale complexes to intimate interior spaces, design is an integral part of what Kirk offers to all clients.

At right is a case study of a recent project. Typically, clients are architects providing some or all of the design. In this case the client was the Newark Housing Authority who needed to raise interest and funding for a project before they could hire an architect. They provided the images at the top as precedents, desiring a "ziggerat" style building with balconies and a stepped facade. The program called for retail at the ground level, office space on the second level, and residential on the upper 10 floors.

The site, shown in the aerial photo, presently contains two low income housing projects on what once was a prestigious part of Newark, sitting on a rise giving views off in the distance of the NYC skyline.

Several massing models of the building, as shown in the third and fourth images, were created and discussed with the NHA to hone in on the final form.

In order to get a feel for how the proposed building would fit into its context, the model was further developed with detail on the surrounding buildings. The fifth image down shows the final massing of the building as well as the basis of the final image.

The base was then sketched over to develop the details, as shown in the sixth image down.

The final rendering, shown at bottom, was hand drawn and painted entirely from scratch, including the adjacent historic buildings.
